Our Vision and Values
Our vision is to create an eco-friendly and multi-generational, senior-friendly cohousing community in a beautiful location surrounded by nature. Private dwellings will be built in a sustainable way and could also include tiny houses or apartments. Members will have access to common spaces such as a beautiful common house with a vegan kitchen and dining hall, guest rooms as well as shared spaces that could include rooms such as an art studio and a multi-purpose community room for meetings, movement, and meditation, etc. Common outdoor spaces will include a large community garden, and potential amenities such as a hot tub and sauna and other areas or structures that members want. We value meaningful connections, diversity, and privacy. Our vision is to cultivate a supportive and affordable community where people can gracefully age in place, whether that is near-term or long-term. We will share vegan-inspired meals a few nights a week in our common dining hall and kitchen, and residents can eat according to their own preferences in their own homes. We are currently searching for a site in West Sonoma County or Mendocino County, California. Please see our Site Search to learn more.
Our Values include:
actively being in community
stewardship of the environment
learning & growth
interdependence
mutual respect
support
compassion
spirituality
family fun/humor
healthy living
diversity
participating in the larger community.
Why Vegan-inspired?
Although folks can eat what they want in their own kitchens, our common meals will be vegan, which is a common denominator since everyone eats plants. Here are some reasons why GreenLeaf Cohousing will share plant-based meals:
o A plant-based diet is healthy for our planet, our bodies and for the animals.
o We believe that all animals deserve to live lives free of cruelty, preferably freely in their natural habitats.
o We protest the cruel exploitation and slaughter of billions of animals each year for profit and human consumption.
o We protest the over-fishing and destruction of our oceans and water eco-systems.
o Eating a plant-based diet helps conserve water, saves energy, reduces pollution and carbon emissions and reduces deforestation.
o We believe a plant-based diet supports cardiovascular wellness and can reverse and prevent many other diseases. We also acknowledge that some people feel that their bodies require consuming animals and animal products and want everyone to feel welcomed in our community. This is an ongoing dialogue we are having.
We look forward to sharing healthy and delicious plant-based meals in our common dining hall. We will strive to prepare meals that will satisfy everyone, including omnivores.
